What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a martial art and combat sport originating in Thailand[1]. It is known as the “art of eight limbs” due to its use of fists, elbows, knees and shins[1][4]. Muay Thai has its roots in the Sukhothai dynasty of Thailand around the 13th century[2], and was developed for hand-to-hand combat during warfare[2][3]. It is now trained across the world and numerous organisations broadcast Muay Thai ring fighting events to millions of fans globally[2].
Muay Thai incorporates strikes using the fists, knees, shins and elbow as well as an element of grappling[3][5]. There is also an element of stand-up grappling known as the clinch[2][3]. Pre-fight Muay Thai traditions include a ritual dance known as Wai Kru Ram Muay which pays respect to one’s teacher, family, and country[4].
Muay Thai training involves grueling cardio workouts and sparring with other students to make practitioners stronger both mentally and physically[5]. While it is commonly practiced by children in Thailand competitively, there is no belt system in Muay Thai like there is in other martial arts[4][5].
